Pool Cleaning: What to Know
You have to clean your pool on a regular basis to keep it looking and feeling good, not to mention safe and healthy. You’ll need a little bit of elbow grease and the proper equipment to skim, brush and vacuum your pool to a brilliant shine. This will keep scum and other icky stuff from accumulating on your pool walls, floors and stairs.
You will need the following equipment:
- Telescopic Pole with Brush
- Skimmer Net
You should skim the water every day, which will make the thrice-weekly vacuum process much easier. You will want to brush the pool twice a week.
With the pool brush attachment on the pole, scrub the pool walls and floor to remove dirt and algae. But which type of brush should you buy? It will depend on what the material of your pool is:
- Unpainted Concrete: The brush should have stainless steel and nylon bristles.
- Gunite: The brush should just have stainless steel bristles.
- Fiberglass, Vinyl, or Painted Concrete: The brush should only have nylon bristles.
When brushing, be sure to get the walls, ladders, and corners, and don’t neglect all those little areas where algae like to hide.
Manual Pool Vacuum
You can attach a vacuum head, vacuum hose, skim vac or vacuum plate to your telescopic pole to clean the pool manually.
You should vacuum every other day no matter which method you use.
Robotic Pool Cleaner
This type of automatic pool cleaner is basically a self-contained unit that just lurks around your pool sucking up debris. You don’t have to do a thing. This is a more expensive option, though.
Suction-Side Pool Cleaner
This device works like a manual pool vacuum, attaching to your pool skimmer. It makes a siphon to your filters as the skimmer takes in water. This could lead to filter damage, though, especially if a rock makes it through.
Pressure-Side Pool Cleaner
This works in the opposite way, using water from your filter system, attaching to the return jet. All you have to do is empty the bag when done.
Pool Deck
In addition to the pool itself, you will also have to keep the surrounding deck clean. You will have to spray and sweep on a regular basis, but you’ll also have to disinfect. Use specialty pool deck cleaning agents in liquid form or a water-soluble powder called trisodium phosphate.
You can use this with a gentle pressure washer or simply attach a high-pressure nozzle to your backyard hose.
