How Long Should You Wait Between Adding Chemicals to Your Pool?

You already know the importance of maintaining a clean, bacteria-free and algae-free environment. To do this, you need to add the right amount of chemicals at the right times. It can be quite the chore to stay on top of this, but you have us here at Central Jersey Pools to help you out.

Here’s how long you should wait in between chemical additions, as well as the dangers involved if you don’t get it right.

Wait Times

The wait times are about 10 minutes each. This allows the chemicals to mix thoroughly in the water. This means you can swim about 10 minutes after adding chemicals, especially if you run the pump on high and pour the chemicals slowly in the return. Likewise, if you run your pump on low, you will have to wait longer.

Be sure to brush after each application and with the pump on high for best results.

What NOT to Mix Together

Do not mix two different chlorinating agents such as Trichlor and Cal Hypo together at the same time or an explosion can result.
Do not mix muriatic acid and chlorine or add them at the same time, as this could produce a toxic gas.
After adding Calcium Hypochlorite, wait 24 hours before adding chemicals that could alter their pH, as the water could become cloudy.
