How to Clean Your Hot Tub Cover
Your cover will last a long time if you treat it right. This includes cleaning and maintaining it regularly. Also, you will be able to limit sun damage, prevent mold, and avoid chemical damage by heeding these tips.
Every day, brush debris off the cover, including leaves, sticks, bugs, and snow. Use a simple push broom but don't use anything with sharp edges that could damage the vinyl.
Do a deep cleaning every other week to keep mold at bay.
- Remove the cover and lay it flat on the ground. Using a non-abrasive surface, wipe or rinse it clean. Don't use cleaners with alcohol, detergent, oil or silicone in them.
- Wipe the bottom of the cover with vinegar or bleach and water.
- Apply vinyl protectant or conditioner to protect against UV rays that can lead to fading and cracking.
- Scrub off mold and mildew, then treat with a vinegar or bleach solution.
- Use a disinfectant on mildew on the underside of the cover.
- Check for and repair damage regularly. Patch holes with a vinyl repair kit.
- Dry out your cover occasionally.
- Test and balance your water weekly to avoid bacteria growth.
If you find that the hot tub cover is too heavy for you to fit easily, invest in a hot tub cover lifter, which features hydraulic arms that do the job for you.
Protect Your Cover from the Elements
Here's how to protect your cover from Mother Nature.
Secure the Cover
Make sure the cover is secured so that wind won't whip it off. You may also want to use cover locks.
Use a Cover Cap
This provides additional UV protection on top of the vinyl cover.
Attach Wind Straps
These are anchored to your cabinet so the cover stays put.
Remove Patio Furniture and Plants
If a storm is on its way, put away all heavy items, such as patio furniture, grills and potted plants. High winds can send those objects right onto your cover.
Trim Bushes and Trees
This way, they won't break off and land on the cover.
Install an Umbrella or Gazebo
To avoid bleaching and weakening your cover, put an umbrella over it.
Use Cover Protectant
This will keep your cover from fading, drying out, and cracking.
