Filter Cleaning
It’s important to keep your hot tub filters clean, but it’s an easy task to forget. Mark it on the calendar so you remember, and be sure to always have the right supplies on hand.
Spa filters get dirty over time, collecting and harboring bacteria, contaminants and debris that are pulled from the water. Your filter is designed to catch all that stuff, from dirt to hair, but if you’re not careful to clean those filters, particles can get back into your water.
Hot tub filters feature three main parts:
- Media: These are made out of pleated, white polyester and are designed to catch debris as they pass through the filter.
- Core: This reinforces the media, usually made of plastic.
- End Caps: These keep both of the above components in place.
Cleaning Your Filters
First, you have to gather the right supplies. Those include:
- Garden hose
- Bucket
- Filter cleaner
- Chemical rinse
- Chemical soak
Weekly
Remove the filters and rinse with a hose. Spread all pleats to get in between.
Monthly
Do a chemical rinse monthly. Spray the filters, and let sit for 20 minutes, followed by a rinse.
Quarterly
Do a chemical soak quarterly. Put the filter soak chemicals with water into a bucket. Let sit for 24 hours. Rinse and place back in the hot tub.
Tips
In addition to cleaning the filters properly, you should also avoid the following.
- Don’t use bleach because it can damage the media fibers and shorten the filter’s lifespan.
- Stay away from household cleaners, as you could experience a big foam problem.
- Don’t put them in the dishwasher: They will get clean, but they will degrade the filters much more quickly than if you didn’t use the dishwasher.
When to Replace Filters
Do this once a year, or more often if the spa gets a lot of use. Check your filters once a month and replace them if you notice the media is ripped or bent, or the end caps are discolored, cracked or brittle.
